JOHANNES VAN LEXMOND

1769 — Dordrecht — 1838

A Rural Winter Scene by a Frozen River

pencil underdrawing and watercolor. 91/4 x 133/8 (235 x 340mm).

The attribution of this drawn "painting" was kindly confirmed by Christian van Eeghen of the van Eeghen Collection in the Hague.1 In fact, a comparable drawing is in that collection and can be seen on the database of the RKD.

Characteristic and unique to this artist's drawings is the use of red ink & wash in the branches of trees. At least eight comparable gouache landscapes are preserved at the Musee Royaux in Brussels. Some of these are signed, but none is more attractive in composition than the present work.
